Council Tax Calculator — England

Updated for the 2026/27 tax year
Check your council tax bill by band for any of the 296 English billing authorities, using MHCLG's published 2026/27 figures. Every amount is the full area total — the council's charge plus all precepts — not just the district slice some calculators show.

How bands are assessed

England's council tax bands (A to H) are based on what your property was worth on 1 April 1991 — not what it's worth now. The Valuation Office Agency assigns the band. Band D is the reference point, and every other band is a fixed statutory fraction of it: Band A is 6/9 of Band D, Band H is 18/9 (exactly twice Band D). So once you know your authority's Band D figure, every band follows from it.

What determines your authority's rate

Two houses in the same band pay very different amounts depending on where they are, because the bill bundles together several separately-set charges:

Most council tax calculators only do a postcode lookup for one address. This one covers all 296 authorities by band, so you can compare — and it's the same council-tax figure MyTaxReality folds into your complete tax position alongside Income Tax, NI and everything else.

Council tax is one line in a much bigger picture.
